Livestock

Agriculture is the backbone of Johnston County, and our local livestock industry plays a massive role in keeping our community strong, thriving, and fed. Here at N.C. Cooperative Extension, our mission is to support our local farmers, ranchers, and producers by providing science-based information and practical research you can rely on to improve your operations.

Whether you are managing a large-scale commercial operation or just starting out with a small family herd, we are here to provide the tools, workshops, and expert guidance you need to succeed in today's agricultural landscape.

Empowering the Next Generation: Our Youth Livestock Program

We believe the future of agriculture starts with our youth. Our Youth Livestock Program is designed to build character, instill responsibility, and develop critical life skills in the next generation of agricultural leaders. Through hands-on learning, our youth participants excel in:

Livestock Judging Skills: Teaching youth how to critically evaluate animals, back up their decisions with sound logic, and sharpen their public speaking skills.

Animal Shows & Exhibitions: Providing opportunities for youth to raise, care for, and showcase their livestock, culminating in events like our annual Johnston County Youth Livestock Show & Sale.

Competitive Events: Fostering teamwork, sportsmanship, and a deep-rooted passion for the livestock industry through local and state-level competitions.
