NC Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program,(EFNEP), is a federally funded program within Cooperative Extension. The EFNEP program is in every state and US territory. EFNEP targets audiences of low income and limited resource families. In collaboration with many organizations, through the Eat Smart and Move More initiative, NC EFNEP aims to reduce the rising tide of obesity and chronic disease by teaching families practical skills resulting in changed behaviors that help them to eat smart, move more and achieve a healthy weight.

Although the EFNEP program has been in existence in the United States since the 1960’s, EFNEP was only reintroduced to Union County in September 2011, following a lapse of more than 25 years.

ABOUT ADULT EFNEP IN UNION COUNTY

Adult EFNEP is available free of charge to limited resource adults who are responsible for the care of children, such as parents, grandparents, or other extended family members. Other adults may qualify if they are responsible for the planning and preparation of a child’s meals and they meet the income guidelines.

The adult EFNEP classes are traditionally taught in a series of nine weekly, 60 minute sessions. Scheduling for classes is flexible and may be provided on evenings or weekends. Classes are available in English and Spanish. Program participants who complete the EFNEP series will receive a certificate from NC State University Cooperative Extension.

In Union County, the EFNEP Educator is Judith Garcia. Judith can be reached at 04-283-3737 or jcgarcia@ncsu.edu.
