Description: Woodland Stewards: A regional Extension program for landowners.

Getting to know your woodlands: A primer for beginners

Join other woodland landowners through out the region to learn about how you can take better care of your woodlands. This is a regional Extension course being offered in 5 sessions.  The first four sessions are webinars hosted by your local Extension center on Thursdays from 7-9 PM from February 21, 2019 to March 14, 2019. 

February 21, 2019: 7-9 PM   Getting to know your Woodlands, learn how natural and human forests have shaped the forest in this region and the importance of this knowledge when developing management plans and practices on their forests.

February 28, 2019: 7-9 PM Managing your Woodlands, learn about the basics of pine and hardwood management with tips on managing for the future.

March 7, 2019: 7-9 PM  Identifying and Managing Woodland Threats, learn about forest health with emphasis on a few basic pest principles, model example of each threat, and some simple practices to help ensure your woodland remains healthy and productive.

March 14, 2019: 7-9 PM  Wildlife and Woodlands, learn about wildlife and your woodlands with a focus on wildlife habitat requirements and enhancing habitat for game and non-game wildlife.

An optional fifth session maybe offered by the local Extension center. To participate in this course contact one of the following Extension offices.

Wheat Field Day April 30, 2019, 2 hours NODX
The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service is inviting all growers to attend a Wheat Field Day on April 30th at 11:00. The Field day will be held on Black Creek Road. The field location is between Hopewell Freewill Baptist Church and 5360 Black Creek Road, Smithfield. Parking on the field path will be available. We will discuss varieties, and diseases, insect and weed control. There will also be a pick the best yielding wheat contest available for those interested. Coming from Smithfield on 210, Left on Black Creek, go passed Hopewell Church, field on right, from Four Oaks, take Black Creek Road, pass Packing plant and field will be on left. Safe Plates is a course for Food Protection Managers and satisfies requirements for the 2017 Food Code. Class will be held at the Johnston Ag Center:

May 1st, 9a-4p (1-hr lunch break, lunch not provided)

May 3rd, Exam begins at 9a

Registration deadline is April 12th and can NOT be extended. Registration fee is $125 and includes book, presentation copies, study guide, 2 practice exams, digital thermometer, and exam.
