Agricultural Sales
Tax Exemption: Electricity

Most farmers know that they may qualify for exemptions from sales tax on equipment and other goods that they purchase.  As with any law dealing with taxes, there are requirements that must be met and steps that farmers must take to qualify.  Did you know that the sales tax exemption also applies to the electricity that you use on your farm for certain practices like curing tobacco?  Furthermore, as of July 14, 2014 the sales tax rate on electricity increased from 3% to 7%.  Take a look at your recent electrical bills for tobacco curing, if you paid tax then you can probably get that money refunded for up to three years.  Please see the information below from the NC Department of Revenue to determine if you may qualify for the exemption.  In addition, you can access NCDOR Form E595E which you may need to acquire a refund and establish an exemption by clicking the links below.
