Carolina Silver Bell (Halesia tetraptera) A medium sized tree that will grow in some shade. White to pale pink flowers on pendulous stalks in April. Native plant in the Southeast. Interesting bark with long fissures of gray, brown, and black.

Cypress Carolina Sapphire (Cupressus arizonica ‘Carolina Sapphire') A silvery-blue evergreen juniper with a medium growth rate and a loosely pyramidal shape. Nice variety to add some color to the landscape. Native to the Southwestern U.S.

Old Man’s Beard (Chionanthus virginicus ‘Spring Fleecing’) Male cultivar of a native slow growing small tree/large shrub with fragrant, white, long petaled flowers in early summer. Found natively on stream banks and borders of swamps. Yellow fall color. This variety flowers at an early age.

Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis ‘Hearts of Gold’) Newer introduction to the nursery trade. A small tree with bright golden foliage that doesn’t burn in full sun. Lavender flowers in early spring. Maidenhair (Ginkgo biloba ‘Saratoga’) A slow to medium growth rate on this male cultivar. Brilliant gold fall color on this large tree. Prefers deep, sandy, moderately moist soils. Not the prettiest of small trees, becoming majestic with age. Large tree that is tolerant of many situations.

Kousa Dogwood (Cornus kousa ‘Satomi’) A Pink flowering dogwood. Kousa dogwoods bloom about 2 weeks after the native dogwoods. Fruit is ½ to 1 inch red globe. Has fewer pest and disease problems than native dogwoods.

Purple Pixie Loropetalum (Loropetalum chinensis ‘Purple Pixie’) This new variety of Loropetalum is a low growing variety with burgundy leaves and showy pink flowers. Prefers acidic soils like azaleas. Prefers high organic matter soils. Makes a good ground cover.

Holly Tea Olive, False Holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘Goshiki’) Beautiful evergreen shrub with interest throughout the seasons. Holly-like leaves with a slow growth rate. New growth emerges pink and matures to green leaves with white and cream flecks.

Kaleidoscope Abelia (Abelia x grandiflora ‘Kaleidoscope’) This little gem of a plant prvides color year round. White flowers appear summer to fall attracting bees and butterflies. The name kaleidoscope comes from the many colors on the leaves that keep changing from season to season.

Summer Sweet or Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia ‘Hummingbird’) A compact, deciduous shrub for the home gardener. White, fragrant flowers appear June to July. Black-green leaves turn yellow in the fall. This native plant spreads by underground stems and should be planted in an area where it can spread.

Pink Anise tree (Illicium ‘Woodland Ruby’) This hybrid plant has fragrant foliage (licorice odor) and fragrant ruby red flowers that bloom late spring to early summer. Can be a nice specimen plant or a great addition to a mixed border of screening plants. Parts of this plant are poisonous if eaten.
